Doctorate in Historical Musicology from the Universidade Nova de Lisboa, degree in Arts Education (Conservatório Nacional de Lisboa - National Conservatory of Lisbon), Orchestra and Choir Director.
He is Assistant Professor in the Department of Musical Science (Universidade Nova de Lisboa) and Guest-Lecturer of the Universidade Católica Portuguesa School of Arts, and Assistant Conductor of the Gulbenkian Choir since 1976.
Distinguished researcher, editor and performer of Portuguese music, he has performed countless modern first auditions, first-ever performances and recordings of vocal and instrumental works by Portuguese composers.
He has recorded several series of television programs (1982, 1988 and 2008) and represented Portugal in the Eurovision and Worldvision, in 1986. He conducted the RDP (Portuguese State Radio) Symphony Orchestra, the Lisbon Metropolitan Orchestra, the Macau Chamber Orchestra, the “Orquestra do Norte”, the Lisbon Chamber Orchestra, the Sousa Carvalho Chamber Orchestra, the Musicatlântico Orchestra, the Cascais and Oeiras Chamber Orchestra, the Collegium Instrumentale of Bruges, the Bavaria State Radio Choir, and he has participated in International Festivals in Pamplona, Palencia and Badajoz (Spain), Rotenberg e Munich (Germany), Brussels (Europália 91) and Israel (1998).
His discography includes recordings with the Gulbenkian Choir, with the Cantus Firmus group and with the Lisbon Chamber Orchestra - "Música Portuguesa do século XVIII" (Portuguese Music from the XVIII century), which received, amongst other prizes, an award from the French Recording Academy.
In 2000/2001 he was director of the Teatro Nacional de S. Carlos.
Since 2001, he has been the president of the Commission for the Supervision of Regional Orchestras.
