Land Art || JiuXian
Nov.2009 || 6 artistas || 30 dias na vila milenar
Applications are open for a residence for artists coming from all over the world - a place in the village of JiuXian in China – that, during 30 days will discuss the importance of art in the world today and tomorrow, boosting the sustainability and cultural tourism in the area, as well as innovation and welfare of the inhabitants of this ancient village.
This initiative comes to Portugal for the first time through a partnership between DaST - Design a Sustainable Tomorrow, as the main agent defender of the cultural future of the town of JiuXian, the WOA - Way of Arts, as the central entity, and ArtistLevel Networks as proactive in raising the artists, promoting the Land Art as a central theme of the work to be undertaken during the period of residence.
The concept desired from the artistic production during the workshop / residency, is the creation of works in various media - architecture, sculpture, painting, photography, performance, video art and multimedia - based on the interpretation of the project in development for the recovery of JiuXian village. This interpretation is based on the program, outlined by the coordinator of the workshop, together with the mentor of DaST, and the WOA representative executive.
The six artists selected will be joining other artists from around the world in this residence. Travel expenses, catering, accommodation and materials for artistic production will be supported by the organization within the 30 days (from November 15 to December 15) that follows the workshop. Some of the work will be presented in a collective exhibition in Portugal, at a time and place to be designated and the remaining work will be part of a museum in JiuXian.
Some notable figures in the art world will also be present in the residence in JiuXian, such as the founders of the No Name Group (group of contemporary Chinese movement), the pianist Elisha Abashe (prodigy since 6, the grandson of Russian composer Alexander Scriabin) and Frederic Coustols (Design a Sustainable Tomorrow).
Only artists enrolled in ArtistLevel Networks, may apply for the residence in any of the categories. Applications arise until September 8th 2009. The theme of the work for this contest is free. The selection of the works in competition will be evaluated following the concept, technique and aesthetics of their work and an interview with the artist. The names of the winners will be announced in artistlevel.org portal by October, 16th 2009.
